“The Dinner Party Reaction”

     In today’s society we see the awakening of feminist consciousness. People start paying attention to the topic about feminist, by not only using the political and social movement, now we can also see it thought art. As we know, Judy Chicago make “The Dinner Party” is also to express her opinion about feminist movement.

 Judy Chicago is currently having an exhibition for her piece in Brooklyn Museum. I went to the Museum at February 5th and have actually seen the work. It was a very different experience by watching it in front of my then by the picture posted on the internet.

On those multiple of plant meals in “The Dinner Party” I was focusing on watching the one that is named Margaret Sanger. As most of other pieces, this pant Margaret Sanger is also design by the female sexual organ. It is all covered by the color of black as base and dark red in most of the parts, which gives me a bloody and very uncomfortable feeling. The piece is made in three dimensional. Since not all of the meal plants on The Dinner Party are display and made in the three dimensional form. Therefore this bloody and out pooping form has quickly gets my attention.

Margaret Sanger (1879-1966) as the guiding book in the museum introduce, she was a:”Pioneering campaigner for birth control and advocate for sexual and reproductive education; she believed that involuntary child bearing led to poverty and oppression.” Her background matches the form of the piece that Judy Chicago design gives me a non-connecting and understandable feeling at first. How a feminist who are spreading the idea of birth control could would have to be use a bloody scary way to present it.
