3. What experiences have you had while working for RSP which you felt would help you as a Supervisor in Training?

After I have become a RSP field worker I learn that:

l   As a member of RSP we are considered a campus official, we should be more responsible and be the role model for students.

l   Doing patrol, harsh and rigid, may not bring a good impression to the people, but kindness and smile could be a good choice. Always paying attention is necessary, but at the same time I will not cold-shouldered my partner as well.

l   I respect all whom have been my partner and being humble to learn from them; they may also respect me and being happy to get along with me if I once have become their supervisor.

l   Maintain a good habit to schedule myself, so I can be my responsible to my job and have never call out. When I am working, I try to show them I am doing my best, at the same time people can be infected by me.

Learning is an endless process. From a new field worker who does not know everything, to now I could do units patrol alone and known well on my job, I do see my improvements. I believe that in the level of being a supervisor there are more things to learn.

4. If you could, what would you change within RSP? Within the position of Supervisor in the Training?

I agree that, our flashy jacket and the professional way of dressing has a function to give people certain deterrence and sense of security, people like to see us being there. However, we are mostly doing rounds out side of the dormitory, that the people who usually stay inside the dorm could not really see us. In addition, most complex situations happen inside the dormitory, but not outside. I believe there could be better ways for increasing efficiency on patrol.

If I could be a Supervisor, I would like to suggest increasing the frequency for doing hall way patrol and adding more authority on patrolling. While the RA is not there, we could be the people’s support, even only just being there and report the situation to the Head Quarter. This would be more practical then only checking on doors, lights that we rarely interact and promote ourselves to the people.

5. What is vision of the program for the next three years and why?

The Residential Safety Program—RSP as we know is to promote safety in our community. As a field worker, our jobs most of the time is: checking the doors, blue light phones, being aware on the emergency situations and sometimes walking with people. We definitely know what our job is and what is not. However, in my working experience, many times I met people who do not know what an RSP is and what we are doing, they might over estimated our powers and except us to give help which is not in our duty. Personally I really do want to help, but for following rules I must refuse doing so.

In my opinions, RSP should start thinking how to increase our authority and propagandize more to the people. We should push out program, letting more students know what we are and what our job is. For this we can have more interaction with people in school. We can receive more about students request; hear more about their advice and what they think we should improve. By having more power, learning more things, people knowing us well, every RSP members would be really proud to themselves and being honor for being a RSP. Eventually, people all want to be RSP, and we could be the most advance program in Stony Brook University.

1.   In essay form, please explain what you feel the position of an RSP Supervisor in Training should be, how you feel you will contribute to this position, and why you would like the opportunity to do so.

RSP is the program about safety. We endeavor and try to leave a safety environment for residence. Once I become a Supervisor of RSP, I would have the additional authorities on this job. It is no longer a job that just walks in for the duty and left. As a Supervisor, it means we get more responsibility. We should be concern not only on the part of the external--the occupational fields and rounds, but also on the part of internal--the leading and managing for the members of RSP.

On the level of a Supervisor in Training, we have a further status by being a campus official. For this reason, we should be more responsible on everything we have done. On the position of RSP Supervisor, we start get into the core of RSP. More rules and discipline have been putting on us. A Supervisor of RSP should have well abilities on: leading, training determining and independent working skills.

Since we have the additional authority as before, we have to start teaching, training and showing new members what the job is in RSP. Keeping our fame and also being as inferior’s role model are very important for us being a RSP Supervisor in training. People all make mistakes, how do we lead the people not making the same mistake again and making sure they are on the right track, it really depends on how we manage the people. I believe a well contribution for being a RSP Supervisor could simply to let our inferiors being respect to us. Therefore, as a RSP Supervisor in Training, an individual working ability would be really important. Although most of the time we are working with partners, but maintaining a good leadership, knowing well how to determine and judging to deal with different situations is definitely necessary for a Supervisor to learn individually.

For a semester’s field worker experience, I have met different partners. Every time of working is a chance for me to improve myself. English is my second language. RSP gives me a chance to meet peoples and makes me became situated in to this culture. I have seen my improvement on my English. By having the responsible to my job, I have been using English more frequently then I was before. A few days ago, I met one of my friends who I have not seen her for a while. She said my English have been improved a lot. I was very happy at the time and also being thankful for RSP to let me improve myself, not only on the part of language, also the way of dealing things. I found myself being more active in this community.

Being a member of RSP gave me a chance to learn more and also makes me have chance to deal with things by the status of campus official. At the same time, I earned some money for supporting my family. Once I put on my flashy uniform, I try to show people my diligent for this job and maintain my honor to be a RSP member.

I am proud of myself being a member of RSP and I am happy with getting this chance to become a Supervisor. This is the chance for me to not only improve myself, but also letting me help RSP this program to get better.

Being a Supervisor would be an endless lesson. I would have to meet any difficult situations every day. However I would learn and improve myself through this challenge. Even though I have job being a RSP, but I am still a college student. Being a supervisor would be a good training for me to experience being a employee while still a student. Eventually, when I graduate, I would bring these experiences that people rarely could get into the future; this is a challenge for me to get ready to my life beyond the college. I believe I could do it.
